What Is HYROX?

Is HYROX the Ultimate Fitness Test?

HYROX is a global fitness competition that blends endurance running with high-intensity functional exercises. Often referred to as the “marathon of fitness,” HYROX challenges athletes to complete eight 1km runs, each followed by a demanding workout station, all in a single timed race.

It’s the first event of its kind to standardise functional fitness into a race format, meaning no matter where in the world you compete, the course and challenges are always the same.

HYROX Origins and Global Growth

HYROX was founded in Germany in 2017 by fitness entrepreneurs Christian Toetzke and Moritz Fürste, a two-time Olympic hockey gold medalist. Their vision was simple but ambitious: create a sport that tests strength and stamina while being inclusive enough for everyday gym-goers.

Since its launch, HYROX has grown into a global phenomenon, with races held in over 10 countries, including the UK, US, Spain, France, Netherlands, Germany, and Australia. The format’s repeatability has made it ideal for international expansion, allowing athletes to compare their scores globally.

Race Categories:

  • Open: For the general public; scalable and achievable with training

  • Pro: Heavier weights, aimed at experienced athletes

  • Doubles: Teams of two share the workout stations but run together

  • Relay: Teams of four complete two stations each (great for first-timers)

Why HYROX Is Different from CrossFit or Marathons

HYROX sits between CrossFit and endurance events like marathons or Spartan Races. It’s not about max lifts or randomised workouts, but about measurable, repeatable fitness.

Feature HYROX CrossFit Spartan Race
Workout Format Same every event Varies daily Obstacle-based
Endurance Element 8km running Minimal (unless programmed) Trail running + obstacles
Strength Element Functional stations Olympic lifting & gymnastics Bodyweight & obstacle tasks
Competitive Classes Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay RX, Scaled, Teams Age Groups & Open

This hybrid design makes HYROX a perfect goal for gym members who want a challenge without needing to master complex lifts or jump over fire pits.

The Benefits of Training for HYROX

  • Goal-Oriented Training: Every session can be aligned with the exact race format
